Who Should Participate?

The seminar is designed for teachers from kindergarten through grade eight.

About the Seminar

Program Description

Participants examine generalizations at the heart of the study of operations in the elementary grades. They express these generalizations in common language and in algebraic notation, develop arguments based on representations of the operations, study what it means to prove a generalization and extend their generalizations and arguments when the domain under consideration expands from whole numbers to integers. They consider teacher moves that support students in making generalizations and justifications.

Participants will be able to:

  • Analyze classroom cases to identify student-generated justifications and generalizations related to number sense
  • Describe the development of generalizations and justification across grades K-8
  • Identify teacher moves that advance students' algebraic sense
  • Articulate a vision of exemplary mathematical practice

Developing Mathematical Ideas (Schifter, Basatable, Russell) is a curriculum designed to help teachers think through the major ideas of K-8 mathematics and examine how children develop these ideas. The heart of the materials are classroom cases illustrating student thinking as described by their teachers. The curriculum offers teachers opportunities to view and discuss videotapes of classrooms and students, to explore mathematics in lessons, to share and discuss the work of their own students, to analyze lessons taken from innovative elementary mathematics curricula, and to read overviews of related research.
