Continuing Your Education in Troubled Times
Unemployed? Need new or different skills to help you and your résumé stand out?
You’re not alone. Over the past few months, we’ve heard from an increasing number of people who have found themselves suddenly unemployed or
out of work because their field is in decline. And when money is tight, paying for continuing education can feel like an unnecessary expense rather than an investment.
If you’re interested in one of our
certificate programs, but are concerned about the cost because you’ve recently been laid off, make an appointment with
WorkSource — Seattle and King County’s employment and training services system. You may be eligible for
training benefits that can extend your unemployment benefits while you complete an approved program. You may also qualify for financial assistance through the Workforce Investment Act if you’re planning to start a new career in an
in-demand occupation. A WorkSource representative will help you determine your eligibility for these programs.
Because of the paperwork and processes involved, you’ll need to schedule your initial appointment with WorkSource at least four weeks before you plan to start a program. Additionally, you’ll have 90 days to apply for training benefits once you become unemployed, so you’ll want to act quickly. To find the WorkSource location closest to you, visit
www.worksourceskc.org/locations.
Once your eligibility has been determined, you’ll receive paperwork that must be completed and signed by the training provider — that’s us. Our enrollment advisers are available to help and can be reached at 206-685-8936 or by
email.
Finding work in today’s competitive field can be stressful and challenging. So is balancing your budget at home. Completing one of our certificate programs with support from WorkSource may help you accomplish both of these goals — you’ll receive a quality education while making use of your unemployment benefits.
