London—the theater and music capital of the English-speaking world for four centuries will again be the focus of the 2010 edition of this popular UW Extension travel-study tour. The tour will center on concert and theater performance, including 12 events in 14 days at the major halls and theaters, offering a wide sampling of the season's best fare. Most evenings will be devoted to performances, while the mornings will feature veteran tour leaders, John Webster, UW English Professor and Rodrick Swantson, of Imperial College, London University.
Though focused on performance, the tour will allow ample time to discover other aspects of London. The days will be free to explore this historic city on your own, to shop or just relax. One day each week will be entirely free from scheduled events in order to allow you to plan your own excursions either within or outside of London, or to attend other events of your choice. Oxford, Stratford, Cambridge, Salisbury or Canterbury are a few of many possible day-trips.

Tour Leader
John Webster has taught at the University of Washington since 1972. He has specialized in Shakespeare and Renaissance drama, and the teaching of teaching. Professor Webster has won both the UW English Department's Award for Distinguished Teaching (2000) and the University's Distinguished Teaching Award (2009). His first award, however, received years ago, was actually as Actor of the Year at Pleasant Hill High School in California’s Concord Valley.
 After a brief stage career at UCLA, Professor Webster has since applied his theatre skills to the classroom—and to the demands of the UW’s London Theatre and Concert Hall tour. In his academic life Professor Webster now serves as Director of Writing for College of Arts and Sciences, where his primary task is to help make writing a central part of every UW student's education.
Recent papers include, "WPAs at the Crossroads: Connecting High School and College Writing," delivered with co-author Anis Bawarshi at Council of Writing Program Administrators' 21st Summer Conference, Chattahooga, Tennessee, July, 2006, and "Have They Kept Doing It: Sustaining Faculty Change in a Learning-based Course-Design Initiative," delivered at the 4th Annual ISSOTL Conference, Sydney, Australia, July, 2008.

General Information
The Ground Tour Price of $3,299 includes:
- Standard double or twin bedded room at the President Hotel in Central London
- Full English breakfast each morning
- Airport Transport - Private Bus
- Airport Porterage
- Concert and Theater Tickets to 12 performances
- Backstage Theatre Tour
- Morning talks by Professor Webster
- London Transit pass (14 days)
NOTE: Roundtrip airfare and laundry service are not included. Please arrange to depart the U.S. on March 12, arriving in London on March 13, and to depart London on March 27. There will be transport from Heathrow airport into London for those people traveling on BA 048, departing Friday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m., and arriving in London on Saturday, March 13, at 12 noon.
Tour members traveling on other flights or arriving on other days will be responsible for their own transportation to the President Hotel, though passengers arriving on Saturday morning on any flight other than BA 048 will also be able to join us on the coach. Transport will also be provided for passengers leaving on BA 049 on Saturday, March 27.
Payment schedule
A $900 deposit, plus a $35 nonrefundable registration fee is due when registering. Half of the balance ($1,199) is due by Jan. 6, 2010; the remaining balance ($1,200) is due by Feb. 10, 2010.
Cancellation
Cancellation must be made in writing, and received prior to the stated deadline. Cancellation fees will be deducted from the account balance, based on the following schedule: $500 for cancellation between Dec. 15, 2009 and Feb. 3, 2010; $1,500 for cancellation between Feb. 9 and March 3, 2010; $3,050 after March 3, 2010. The $35 registration fee is nonrefundable. If viable enrollment is not reached by January 9, 2010, the tour will be cancelled and you will receive a full refund. NOTE: Individual trip cancellation insurance is available from Classic Connections, at 206-547-7300, or you may purchase insurance from your own travel agent.
Passports
You will need a passport to participate in this program. Please check your passport to see if it is current. If you need a new or renewed passport, please apply for one immediately. Tour orientation
Tour Orientation: Before departure, there will be a reception and tour orientation in the Walker-Ames room in Kane Hall, UW, Seattle, date TBD, 7:00–8:30 p.m., to discuss your trip and meet others in your group.
Health concerns
Before registering, please consider the following to help you determine if this tour is appropriate for you:
- There will be considerable walking, including occasional stair-climbing at theater sites
- Foods will vary
- Special diets often cannot be accommodated
- You may need to carry your own luggage
- Medical facilities may not be comparable to those in the United States
If you have any health concerns, please consult your physician regarding the suitability of the trip for you.
Insurance and responsibility
The University of Washington cannot be held responsible for personal illness or injury, nor make any representation as to the availability or level of medical facilities abroad. Participants are responsible for their own health, travel, luggage and personal property insurance. You may wish to apply for optional foreign travel medical accident/sickness insurance coverage on a voluntary basis.
As with any tour program, participants may encounter unexpected risks. These include (but are not limited to) sickness, exposure to disease, political upheaval, accident, the forces of nature, travel dangers on the ground or in the air, and property loss and damage. Apart from the academic content of the tour, the University of Washington acts only as an agent for suppliers and contractors providing services for this tour. The University is not responsible for the acts of third parties which cause injury, death or property loss or damage, nor is it responsible for travel or accommodation disruptions beyond its control. Participants assume all the risks involved and agree to hold harmless the University of Washington for all liability that may arise in connection with participation in the activities of this tour.
The University further reserves the right to deny participation on this tour to any person who fails to make payments or comply with requirements within the specified time, or whose presence could constitute a hazard, and prohibits the use or trade of illicit substances; participants who are found under the influence or in possession of illegal substances will not be allowed to continue with the group.
The University of Washington reserves the right to raise the price of this tour should inflation, dollar devaluation or itinerary changes necessitate such a step. The University will, however, make every attempt to hold costs within the prices quoted.
