Producing and Production Management

See also, Independent Filmmaking Certificate Program for the aspiring professional or serious amateur interested in writing, directing, producing, and marketing an independent film.

Introduction

Students meet for three six-hour Saturday sessions conducted on campus. Students learn how to produce an independent feature or documentary by examining the roles of a producer in choosing a film, development and packaging, and bringing a film into production through hiring a director and production manager, or selectively performing the tasks associated with these roles. Topics covered include legal responsibilities such as contracts, liabilities, unions, and insurance, as well as financial responsibilities including fundraising, fiscal compliance, and marketing. Students also study the roles of a production manager in regard to location scouting and procuring and overseeing various types of production equipment and crew, and learn the differences in requirements for the use of film and of video.
