Learn the techniques used in medical diagnostics to screen, detect, diagnose, and monitor disease. Through lecture and demonstration, examine each stage of the diagnostic process and study the methods, principles, and terminology used in the communication and consultation among various specialists. Learn about research designs and methods to describe disease occurrence, understand disease proliferation, and identify associated risk factors in different populations.

This certificate is part of a series of four medical engineering certificates, and can be taken individually or as a step toward earning the Master of Medical Engineering degree. Students interested in pursuing the master's degree should visit the Web site for program description and admissions requirements.

What the Program Covers

  • Medical imaging diagnostics, including X-ray, computed tomography, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance methods, and their roles in determination and tracking of patient treatment
  • Imaging methods most appropriate for specific anatomic structures or disorders
  • Clinical diagnostics, including terminology, disease presentation, pathology identification, and additional techniques used to identify and follow patients' medical conditions
  • Epidemiologic methods used to define populations, identify, and isolate risk factors, and track progression of diseases using quantitative and biomedical information

Benefits

These courses will provide you with a fundamental understanding of the terminology and techniques used in medical diagnostics that will allow you to help develop new diagnostic technologies and methods for identifying and treating diseases. Credits earned in this certificate can be applied to the Master of Medical Engineering degree if you have been accepted to the master's program.
