Explore the human side of device design and learn to develop systems that can help a wide range of people in a variety of settings. Study how government oversight, laws, and regulations influence and control the creation and production of medical devices. Gain practical tools and strategic methods for successfully commercializing new products and learn how a medical device businesses can be structured and financed.

This certificate is part of a series of four medical engineering certificates, and can be taken individually or as a step toward earning the Master of Medical Engineering degree. Students interested in pursuing the master's degree should visit the Web site for program description and admissions requirements.

What the Program Covers

  • Safe and effective design of medical devices through exploration of physical, mental, and environmental constraints
  • Patents, copyrights, and other intellectual property laws
  • U.S. and international laws, regulatory and clinical strategies, and quality assurance and inspection
  • Entrepreneurship, strategic business planning, project management, marketing, and sales and distribution

Benefits

You will understand successful medical device development and the safety, regulatory, and commercialization processes involved in their production and distribution. Credits earned in this certificate can be applied to the Master of Medical Engineering degree if you have been accepted to the master's program.
