Learn about the expressive potential of the human figure and study proportion and anatomy. Explore various forms and styles of art, such as representation, expressionism, collage, and surrealism. Examine figurative painting styles and methods in art history. Focus exclusively on figure drawing for painting, portrait painting, and painting from the nude and clothed figure.

What the Program Covers

  • Media techniques for painting and drawing the human form
  • Methods to create the underlying form of a clothed figure
  • Proportion, perspective, and the use of negative space, light, and shadow
  • Portrayal of gesture and appearance when working from a model

Benefits

You will create a portfolio of original art representing a variety of artistic styles and exhibit your work on the University of Washington campus.

Who Should Apply

Level: Some Experience

  • Individuals with some prior experience in drawing or painting
  • Individuals who have completed the UW Drawing and Painting certificate program or have a satisfactory portfolio
