Prepare to recognize and manage the elements of disaster scenarios: response, recovery mitigation, risk reduction, prevention, and preparedness. Learn emergency management concepts and principles, and discover a broad range of resources and tools to help assess and reduce potential damages. Become aware of the unique challenges required to protect critical infrastructure systems against a range of disasters.

What the Program Covers
- Key emergency management concepts and principles, and methods for infrastructure protection planning
- Emergency management tools, techniques, and resources, including a GIS for spatial analysis and problem solving, and national data sets related to floods, hurricane winds, and earthquakes
- Challenges of planning and protecting infrastructures, with a critical look at the concepts of protection and resiliency.
- Details about one specific critical infrastructure system in the U.S., including vulnerabilities in the face of a range of critical situations and best practices to reduce these vulnerabilities
- Nature of strategic planning in the public sector, intergovernmental issues of coordination, history of critical infrastructures, and pressing challenges to planning and protecting them
Benefits
You will develop knowledge and expertise in emergency management and disaster preparedness, as well as basic skills with Geographic Information Systems and an awareness of how these can be applied to disaster scenarios. You also will become familiar with how to analyze and plan for the protection of a specific U.S. critical infrastructure system.
